On October 1, 2015, the ICD-9 code sets used to report medical diagnoses and inpatient procedures will be replaced by ICD-10 code sets. ICD-10 codes are more descriptive with a major focus on anatomy, physiology, and precise locations and causes of injuries and illnesses.

The ICD-10 classification system contains 155,000 codes, far more than the previous ICD -9 system which contains 17,000 codes. The expected impacts of ICD-10 transition include:

• Backlogs in coding due to skills limitation and drop in efficiencies.
• Increase in denials- as much as up to 40%
• Negative impact on cash flows due to back logs in coding as well as increased denials
